Melissa Hoyer’s Must Haves for a New Season of Fashion

Spring  fashion trend has a liquorice all-sort or jelly-bean vibe, as style journalist and commentator Melissa Hoyer discovers it has something, for just about everyone.

Spring / Summer 2010 fashion is all about mixing a few out-there trends with some seriously elegant and classic pieces. Sure, there is always a nod to clothing trends gone by (hello 70s this season!) but I reckon it's one of our better looking seasons and one that allows you to mash-up the colours and fashion styles you like without feeling like you are being told what you have to wear! Yep, those fashion dictatorship  days are well and truly gone.

Baggy pants

For the last decade, fashion style has been about skinny or much slimmer pants, which of course included our universal wearing of footless leggings and heavy opaque tights. This season, though, trousers are higher-waisted; looser; pants are baggier and more man-style in their shape.  Loving it!

Neutrals

Neutral tones create an extremely elegant, barely there look. Champagne, beige, soft apricot and just about all shades of grey are incredibly in. The main reason for neutral push is that there are so many fast and loud prints that we need some neutrals to balance them all.

Big and bold prints

Just about every style from pants to skirts to shirts and dresses are being found in brash geometric patterns and good ole animal prints. The trends really enhances those neutrals I just spoke about. Stripes, too, are big news, but they have to be big and bold and not small and insignificant.

Great legs can wear short shorts

Get out some hot pants (yes, I said the 70s were back) while boy shorts are making the season really emphasise legs. You can wear them with knee opaque or over-the-knee socks for a younger look but if you are thinking 'short',  don't go too tarty short. Always remember the mutton dressed as lamb analogy!

The blokey vibe

Blazers and vests are still in, but now they're worn with shorts and leggings. Big shoulders are still with us (a nod to the 80s and the Dynasty and Dallas eras) but have fun with your masculine vibe with some more 'girly' accessories like hair bands, some lace accents, coloured-stone jewellery and some fantastic brooches worn on your lapels.

Denim

Expect denim shirts to be peeking out from underneath leather jackets and oversized blazers. Love them! They're a nod to the 90s clothing trends and also adds a nice layered look that is relaxed and tres chic. And speaking of denim,  a few torn jeans and denim patches are back too. You have been warned! And always team your denim with some good, crisp white Tee shirts and don't forget some denim on denim (double denim) action too.

Lopsided lengths

T-Shirts, blouses and tunics are short in the front and long in the back or vice-versa. Often called the fishtail shirt, the back can be a few inches longer than the front, as far down as the knees but as with any extreme fashion style, dress this style with something simple so it is the star!

The sporty jumpsuit

A jumpsuit has gone beyond being found in the pits of a Formula One racetrack and has made the leap onto the fashion racks. For Spring, lace-up shorts, v-neck sweaters and fashion-conscious sweatpants have also made an effortlessly sexy segue into fashion dress too.

Feathered friends

Feathered skirts and feathered dresses are turning the volume way up as hot fashion trends this season and we can expect them in mini-skirts, on party dresses and as accents on jackets and simple tops. Many feathers are in neutral tones so if it's a skirt, pair it with a simple neutral tone top, but keep it simple. Feathers are a show all by themselves.

wow What does a 46 young at heart wear ???

Great article on the seasons ‘must haves’ - I’m all geared up and ready to go - out! What a relief to have higher waists and baggier pants - lovin it.

To Donna - whatever you feel comfortable in. I’m a slim trim 61. I dont feel like a granny and I dont dress like one. This seasons colours will look great on us older gals.

have already started with the neutrals, the stripes and the low back t’s this season, just bought quite a bold but beautiful dress to wear to my brothers wedding so it’s good to read your tips and feel a little affirmation!  X

Can you please do an article on what hot young 45-50 year olds should be wearing to look fab this spring/summer and can you cover different size ranges???

I’m with Sue…something aimed at those in their early 40s would be awesome and where to go to buy these clothes. I know that some shops are no-go zones because of their ridiculous sizes and trends but I’m equally confused about which ones to go to for the middle ground - how to avoid mutton-dressed-as-lamb but don’t want to look old before my time!

Well it seems all us over 45’s are checking this site out.  Probably because fashion is so confusing these days.  It’s either short - frilly -tight or see through.  Where’s middle of the road ??? I mean before we go to Millers only.  I’m over the elastic around the bottom of all the tops they either make you butt look bigger or slide up and accentuate the little bubble we all have around the meno-centre.

Hey Rouge thank you so much for my freebie.  Just when I needed it too, puffy eyes yuk - hope it works will let you know.

Rouge thank you so much for the amazing Olay eye roller I will be buying for sure it really deflates the puffs!
