Always work out what works for your size and body shape: By this age, you know your body and it's good and maybe, not so good points. Hate your arms? Cover them. Your tummy has no chance of ever disappearing? Don't wear a really tight dress. Good legs? Show them off. All because 'fashion' may decree body hugging dresses and strappy tops are 'on trend' don't feel you have to follow. You can wear strapless . . . but put a cute cropped bolero over the top. Sure, you can give a nod to ever-changing 'trends' but interpret them to suit your body.
Colour can be your friend: Your penchant for loud color often declines as you get older, but get over it! Beige, black, white and grey aren't the only hues to choose! Splashes of bright colors like orange, purple, red, green and blue can work brilliantly with your neutrals but avoid, where possibly, too many pastels. Your face needs a bit of color to warm it up, so go for it!
* Indulge in a few investment pieces and fashion classics: Nothing says mutton dressed up as, you know what, than pouring yourself into all those trends the cool kids wear. If I was to give you a small list of wardrobe must-have that you will wear they would be: a trench coat, a simple crisp white shirt, dark or vintage dark jeans, a tuxedo jacket and a simple black fitted dress with cap sleeves. You can then perk them up with your choice of jewellery, scarves and a **** good hair style!
Think of yourself as a good bottle of Grange: By your 40s and 50s you really shouldn't give a toss about what other people think of you. Don't worry about the opinions of others and embrace your own sense of self. Designer clothes will not cover up feeling bad about yourself.
Ditch the “mumsy” jeans: Think Kate Day-Night (in Kath and Kim) and don't go down that jeans style path. Usually tapered, with a higher waist and a pleat down the front (got the picture?) there is no excuse to ever wear them. There are a zillion pairs of jeans in every price range, so avoid the 'mumsy' vibe! The best pair? Dark or vintage denim in a boot cut style. Enough said.
Never underestimate the power of good or 'bold' jewellery: Worn with a simple dress . . . you will suddenly look fashionable if you throw on a whole lot of big bangles, a chunky necklace or some killer earrings.
Always keep the term 'age appropriate' in your mind: But don't let that deter you from indulging in current trends but of a more subdued scale. If your teenage daughter is wearing . . .don't you wear it too! Sure, bolder statement shoulders are great but don't go the extreme when you are of a certain age. If you find yourself wondering if you're too old to rock a trend, the answer is probably yes. And if you did wear the trend the first decade it was around, perhaps it is time to give it away.
Shape wear is your best wardrobe friend: Whether you are already a die-hard fan of Nancy Ganz or your choice of 'shapewear' you really should remember how well they can work for you. Perhaps not the most passionate of wardrobe staples (passion killers? well, they can be) but think of the flat tummy you'll have when you go out!
I would like to see more pictures of fashion and not to much reading
Congratulations on the site and for exploring this neglected demographic. I cant be bothered picking up any glossies these days because of the irrelevance!
Definitely more “on trend” pics needed. Also can we have HOT TIPS for over 40s ie. where can I buy age appropriate leggings. (you know, the ones without dimple revealing lycra or cotton ones that give you granny knees!!)
Love the suggestions, but would love to possibly see workshop makeovers offered for those that just don’t get it. Not everyone knows what is right for them because they are biased and love what ever they do put on even if it doesn’t suit them. You should do major cities workshops and give some people a bit of help. Even if you charged a nominal fee that could go to a charity I am sure there would be willing participants.
