Put a Brake on Blonde Hair Colour

Just as we love wearing the rich brown tones in fashion trends this season (thanks, Marc Jacobs and Chanel), our hair color should follow suit. Or as we say in the business, “In winter we always go warmer.” That means darkening bright blonde hair - the same hair that looked so right with a summer tan. During the winter, light blonde locks blend in with our winter-pale complexion, resulting in a flat, washed-out look that can be aging. To perk things up, we can wear brighter makeup - but that hardly seems very modern. This year, try dialing things down.

If you’re a single-process blonde, switch to a much warmer strawberry blonde and watch your skin tone come alive. If sun streaks are more your style, have your colourist apply honey-blonde highlights against a base of chestnut brown. The contrast of this base against your skin, with the golden streaks against the brown, is as flattering as it is multidimensional.

However, there’s an exception to every rule with hair trends - and in this case it’s my Palm Beach clients. They want 100 percent blonde all year long. I guess there’s no real pale season in sunny Florida!
