How to Control Oily Skin in the Summer

It's summertime and the living is easy — except if you're dealing with oily skin. We asked Olay celebrity makeup artist Bruce Grayson to offer his top tips for creating a healthy grease-free look all summer long.

Keep it clean

Grayson recommends cleansing twice a day, but warns against using products that might make matters worse. "If you use regular facial soaps, which can be harsh, then that might dry out the skin," he says, "which in turn causes it to overreact and get more oily." He suggests using the multi-purpose Olay Total Effects Cream Cleanser.  This daily facial cleanser with micro-beads provides 7 anti-aging benefits in 1 cleansing step.

Moisturise

"People are lead to believe that because their skin is oily, it doesn't need to be hydrated," says Grayson. "But that couldn't be farther from the truth." Moisturising oily skin helps balance the complexion. But stay away from oil-based products that are too heavy for oily skin and summertime use. Grayson suggests applying a lightweight product like Olay Total Effects Moisturiser With Cooling Essences. This daily moisturiser provides the benefits of 7 anti-aging therapies in 1 product plus a burst of invigorating freshness. "It calms the skin, and also provides some of the anti-ageing and hydration benefits that the Total Effects products carry." Olay Total Effects Daily Moisturiser also boasts anti-aging benefits and helps the skin stay hydrated. Plus, it minimises the appearance of pores, "which is sometimes prevalent in oily skin," says Grayson.

Use Oil-Free Makeup

After moisturizing, wait a few minutes to let it soak in before applying makeup. "I sometimes use a toner or a mattifying primer before makeup," says Grayson. "A light application of either helps to improve texture and the skin's condition." When it comes to coverage, avoid heavy creams and foundations. Grayson recommends using CoverGirl Clean Oil Control Liquid Makeup. The foundation is made with ultra-light oil-absorbers that control oil, plus gentle conditioners that help prevent dryness. For a little extra coverage on those shiny areas — the T-zone, the chin, the bridge of the nose and above the eyebrows — he recommends using a brush to apply a light coat of CoverGirl Clean Oil Control Pressed Powder which gives you a clean, fresh, shine-free look that lasts. "It makes pores less visible and smoothes the skin's surface nicely," he says, "and it also creates a natural look that's not too matte."

Blot With a Tissue

"Oily skin needs a bit more attention," says Grayson. "So you might have to touch up a few times more during the day." He suggests blotting off any extra oil or sweat with a clean sponge, powder puff, blotting papers or even a facial tissue. His trick: "Take a 2-ply tissue and separate it. The single ply has an amazing amount of absorption ability. And you can always find facial tissue!"
